Welcome to Joyride Working Belgian Tervuren ~

Belgian Tervuren excel in many competition arenas. Because of my personal interests, I focus on the working aspects rather than the conformation breed ring. However, I do have hope that someday Tervuren bred for their working ability will be able to compete in the conformation arena as well. Just to clarify; there is a difference between "working" and "sport." My dogs aren't active in the working PROFESSIONS of law enforcement, detection, search & rescue, ranch work or any of the other true "working" jobs but we mimic some of those jobs through sport competition. The argument could be made that I should simply say "sport" lines. However, it is my belief that the dogs I am drawn to and the lines I am focusing on still retain much of the ability to perform in many of the working dog professions. The best "proof" I have is simply the titles of sport within the pedigree. However, not all true working dogs have the need for or the ability to acclimate to a social, household lifestyle. I am choosing those that are capable of that aspect as well, which may dictate less of an ability in other areas. It's all in the balance. So take it for what it's worth.

"Joyride" is the name I chose to represent my "kennel" because it brings to my mind several things; Much like the Tervuren youngster who pushes their limits, it encompasses a bit of the nostalgic innocence of kids doing something they shouldn't - just because the opportunity has presented itself. "Joy" because my dogs bring me so much pleasure. "Joyride" because most of the time, I'm just along for the ride! :-)

It takes many years of planning and experience in multiple venues to know when a good match is worthy of reproducing. We train and compete in Agility, Schutzhund (Obedience, Tracking, Protection), AKC Obedience, Dock Diving and K9 Nose Work which is detection-style searching. In my breeding program, I hope to contribute positively to the currently small population of Tervuren in the U.S. who can be successful within the most difficult competitive sport arenas and still retain the structural integrity and physical beauty distinctive to the breed. "Aloof" is an acceptable description of the Tervuren temperament. I prefer the dog who is overtly social and outgoing. My dogs are house pets and family companions. When looking for dogs who meet the physical and mental requirements, most of us have been led to the Tervuren out of Malinois in Europe who are competing at the highest levels of IPO, Mondio Ring and French Ring. There is a small group of working Tervuren breeders in the U.S. who cooperate and help each other towards the betterment of the breed as a whole. As technology advances, so do our spheres of influence and connection to those who have the same goals and aspirations for their Belgian Tervuren. I enjoy learning about the adventures of working line Tervuren all over the world!

If you're looking for a Belgian Tervuren for high level competition, you're on the right track! I'm happy to answer any questions you might have and discuss the current and future plans of Joyride Belgians. We are located in Southern California, USA.

If a rescue Belgian is something you are interested in, I would be happy to point you in the right direction. There are many deserving dogs looking for a new opportunity for a good life.
